As a writer, I love peace and quiet, but I have to be honest and say that my brain can go a hundred miles an hour if left unchecked. Over the years, I developed a mindfulness practice that helped me calm racing thoughts without having to flood my mind with tons of television.
As time went on, I began to create imaginative scenarios to guide my mindfulness practice, and I shared them whenever I would facilitate workshops or classes. To my surprise, I started to get requests for a “copy of that relaxation thing” that I read. Eventually, I mustered up the courage to compile some of the meditations… and the Lean Back Book was born in October 2020. Since then, parents have told me that reading the meditations to their children manages anxious behavior and teachers say they are useful for refocusing their students.
I am humbled by the tremendous amount of support that I received, especially from friends who said, “record the meditations with your voice”. The encouragement was enough to convince me that I could indeed use my voice to record the meditations in the Lean Back Book, and I called up a faithful friend (Saint!) to film and produce the videos. Then, in an unexpected turn of events, a very personal prayer was answered, and The Orpheum graciously offered to present the series on their digital platforms as a gift to the community, in a season when we can all use a little more hope.
Nowadays, the phrase “use your voice” resonates a bit deeper with me, and my hope is that the mindful moment meditation series will help people lean back and reclaim their peace.
